Social networking is a bit more messy. I initially started with the following services:
- Facebook (actual networking)
- Twitter (status updates)
- Plurk (status updates)
- Brightkite (location/status updates)
- Pownce (status updates)
- Flickr (photos)
- Tumblr (microblogging)
- Ping.fm (updates status)
- Socialthing (aggregator)
- Friendfeed (aggregator)
I guess I’m the one to blame for signing up for everything—or maybe I just wanted to snatch my name before someone else grabbed it. In any case, I might have gone a little overboard with status updates. So I filtered down the list by removing a few sites:
- Plurk—twas a nice way to organize status updates, but I didn’t really need the fancy.
- Pownce—acquired by SixApart and closed.
- Brightkite—status updates really not needed, location updates were a hassle too. Replaced with Google Latitude.
- Socialthing—I still have my account, but Friendfeed has really won me over.
And thus, my current “setup”:
- Facebook—the grand all-in-one social network. Most of my friends live here.
- Twitter—no, I can’t give it up. Quick status updates are amazing.
- Tumblr—what you’re reading right now.
- Flickr—no other way to manage photos.
- Ping.fm—updates all the social networks above.
- Friendfeed—keeps my lifestreams organized, in one place.
