Contact management, part II

Social networking is a bit more messy. I initially started with the following services:

  • Facebook (actual networking)
  • Twitter (status updates)
  • Plurk (status updates)
  • Brightkite (location/status updates)
  • Pownce (status updates)
  • Flickr (photos)
  • Tumblr (microblogging)
  • Ping.fm (updates status)
  • Socialthing (aggregator)
  • Friendfeed (aggregator)

I guess I’m the one to blame for signing up for everything—or maybe I just wanted to snatch my name before someone else grabbed it. In any case, I might have gone a little overboard with status updates. So I filtered down the list by removing a few sites:

  • Plurk—twas a nice way to organize status updates, but I didn’t really need the fancy.
  • Pownce—acquired by SixApart and closed.
  • Brightkite—status updates really not needed, location updates were a hassle too. Replaced with Google Latitude.
  • Socialthing—I still have my account, but Friendfeed has really won me over.

And thus, my current “setup”:

  • Facebook—the grand all-in-one social network. Most of my friends live here.
  • Twitter—no, I can’t give it up. Quick status updates are amazing.
  • Tumblr—what you’re reading right now.
  • Flickr—no other way to manage photos.
  • Ping.fm—updates all the social networks above.
  • Friendfeed—keeps my lifestreams organized, in one place.
